Solar Cup

Metropolitan’s Solar Cup is a STEAM-focused program in which high school students work in teams to learn engineering, physics, math, technical writing and career-building skills. Student use these new skills to transform an empty boat hull into a fully operational solar powered boat.

For 20 years, the innovative water education and environmentally sustainable technology program culminated with a three-day competition at Metropolitan’s Lake Skinner in Riverside County. The COVID-19 pandemic changed Solar Cup, which was recreated with online and virtual offerings aimed at building broader STEAM skills for participating students.

Solar Cup 2022 will once again be online, offering students a menu of activities that cover a wide range of STEAM fields by building a water-saving device combined with robotics, creating a zero emission vehicle, utilizing CAD software, learning basics of electronics and circuits, creating a water conservation campaign and sharpening skills that can help them explore educational and training opportunities that could lead to landing their dream jobs.
